"Whining, whimpering won’t end dumsor" - David Oscar to Celebrities

Ghanaian comedian David Oscar has distanced himself from a campaign, #dumsormuststop, by some celebrities aimed at putting pressure on the government to find a solution to the power crisis.

Over the past few days, some celebrities including Yvonne Nelson, Sarkodie, Lydia Forson, DKB, have expressed their frustrations with the government’s inability to find a lasting solution to the crisis.

Ghana is currently rationing power, popularly known as dumsor, due to shortfalls in production. The power crisis, which has been lingering on for three years now, has had adverse effects on human life and the economy.

The celebrities have announced their intention to hold a vigil on May 16 to put pressure on the government to find a lasting solution to the current power crisis.

But David Oscar, who is also a television personality, believes Ghanaians, including the celebrities, are to blame for the situation.

He said on Facebook, “I’m not even gonna be hypocritical and join the ?#?DumsorMustStop trend. How many of us have tried to conserve energy? Thanks to our waste, the dams are suffering.”

“Don’t get me wrong, I’m a mindless critic of the president JDM, and I understand that there are alternative sources of energy, but do you think that if it was that easy to fix the power crisis, the president would not [have] saved himself the blames and constant harassment? As a nation, we happen to be fault seekers and less of vision implementers,” he added.

The comedian noted that while “Dumsor must stop,” the celebrities’ “constant whining and whimpering would not act as a magic wand. Period!”

Meanwhile a member of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Stephen Atubiga, has lashed out at the organisers of the vigil, alleging they are doing the bidding of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He said supporters of NDC will not patronize intellectual works of the celebrities, warning that they will burn their CDs if need be.

He said on Facebook: “What is wrong with some of our young musicians and actors in this country? How can sakodeyee and co want to lead npp dirty work. Their celebrant or celebrity is the pride of we Ghanaians not for any political party. we will boycott their music and movies if they try championing nana addo dirty work. the dumsor is a national issue not political.

“I have listened to some of sakodeye music about the dumsor, I respect his creativity. But for him trying to undermine our president effort in ending the dumsor for Nana Addo, he should bring it on. Any ndc voter or supporters will not patronize their products and we will come together to burn any of their music and movies we have bought in protest of their undermining of JM (John Mahama). I love sakodeye , I love his music with my family, what he is trying to do, I hope he rethinks because I will lead the unrest against them if they undermine JM for Npp. Well, they should bring it on.”

When Myjoyonline.com contacted Mr Atubiga, he said the comments were his and he stands by them.
