Poor Jerome Boateng has been the victim of endless Internet Memes over the past 24 hours, after falling on his backside in a vain attempt to keep up with Leo Messi.
Messi ran at Boateng, as the Bayern defender retreated for cover into the Bayern box.
Messi decelerated, then suddenly accelarated again, which left Boateng turned inside-out, and he comically fell over before Messi chipped the ball over Manuel Neuer.
Boateng may never live that moment down, which is unfortunate for the World Cup winner, considering he’s already such an underrated player.
Having faced Messi several times already in the past, Boateng knew what he was up against, but there was simply no stopping the four-time Ballon D’Or last night.
He’d managed to keep him at bay in the World Cup final, not to mention the 2013 Champions League semi-final, but on this occasion Messi emphatically got the better of him.
Boateng’s always been an admirer of Messi, but it’s quite possible he’s no longer quite as ‘happy’ about Messi’s existence as he was when he wrote this Tweet in 2013.
