JAPAN: World’s Oldest Man Dies in Japan at Age 112

The world's oldest man, Sakari Momoi – who was born before the Wright brothers made their first powered flight, and before Henry Ford produced his first car – died on Sunday in Tokyo. He was 112.

The Japanese supercentenarian, who was born on Feb. 5, 1903, was named the world's oldest man in June 2014 following the death of 111-year-old Alexander Imich in New York City.

Momoi, a former high school principal and father of five, died of kidney failure in a nursing home, the BBC reported.

He enjoyed reading, especially Chinese poetry, and traveling around Japan with his wife before she passed away, according to Guinness World Records.

Guinness has not yet said who follows Momoi as the world's oldest man, though it may be another Japanese supercentenarian, Yasutaro Koide, who was born on March 13, 1903, and is also 112.

Meanwhile, the oldest living person, the American supercentenarian Susannah Mushatt Jones of Brooklyn, turned 116 years old on Monday.

The oldest person ever officially documented was Jeanne Calment of France, who died in 1997 at age 122 years, 164 days. She was born in 1875, a year before Alexander Graham Bell patented the telephone.
