Gaal: Ryan Giggs will succeed me at Man United

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal believes the club will appoint Ryan Giggs as his successor.

Giggs, 41, was in charge for four games last season after David Moyes’s dismissal and was appointed assistant manager to Van Gaal in May 2014.

Van Gaal, 63, is coming to the end of his first season in charge and has a contract until 2017.

When asked about Giggs, he told MUTV:  “I expect that he will be the next manager after I am gone.”

He added: “Now I have the responsibility. He has tasks that he has to perform like the players [do]. What he has to do, for me, he does it very well.”

Giggs said it was “the proudest moment” of his career to take charge of the club after Moyes’s sacking last season.

The Welshman, who made a record 963 appearances for the club as a player, won two, drew one and lost one during his time in charge.

Meanwhile, Van Gaal says United have offered goalkeeper David De Gea “a lot of money” to keep him at Old Trafford.

De Gea’s fine form this season has seen the 24-year-old linked with a move back to Spain, with reports  European champions Real Madrid are lining up a move for the former Atletico Madrid player.

His contract at United expires at the end of next season.

“It takes a long time now,” Van Gaal said when asked how negotiations with De Gea were progressing.

“It can always happen. I am not the boss. I want him to stay. The player is the boss – he can say ‘yes’ or ‘no’.

“He has to sign. We have offered him a lot of money.”

De Gea joined United from Atletico in June 2011.
