‘Avengers’ Once Again Tops Box Office; ‘Hot Pursuit’ Flops

This time, two beauties couldn’t take on this beast.

“Avengers: Age of Ultron” is still the 800-pound gorilla at the box office.

A week after turning out the second-highest debut weekend in history, the Marvel sequel recorded the second-highest second weekend ever — once again, behind only 2012’s “The Avengers” ($103 million).

In a few more days, “Ultron” will finally have a “first,” when it passes “Furious 7″ as the year’s top-grossing movie thus far. Worldwide, it’s up to $875 million.

“Ultron” was down 60% from last weekend and still had a big box office take.

The Reese Witherspoon-Sofia Vergara comedy “Hot Pursuit” was the weekend’s only new wide release, opening as expected: a distant second, while several returning films battled it out for the bronze.

“Pursuit’s” bad reviews couldn’t have helped matters, and analysts thought the movie might open closer to $18 million.

Next weekend should be much more competitive, as “Ultron” continues edging back toward earth while facing the sequels “Mad Max: Fury Road” and “Pitch Perfect 2.”

Domestic weekend box office estimates from Exhibitor Relations (final numbers available Monday afternoon):

  1. “Avengers: Age of Ultron” — $77.2 million ($312.9 million total)
  2. “Hot Pursuit’ — $13.3 million
  3. “The Age of Adaline” — $5.6 million ($31.5 million total)
  4. “Furious 7″ — $5.3 million ($338.4 million total)
  5. “Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2″ — $5.2 million ($58.1 million total)
